Information for Parents

Our 1st McKinnon Scout Group is run completely by parent and community volunteers.

When you sign your children up to be a part of our group you will also become a part of our scouting community.

Each family is required to support and help throughout the year in various ways.

How can you help?

You will be engaged by our friendly leaders and committee to help out in a few of the following ways:

  • Formal Cub Pack or Scout Troop leader (we really need you!!)

  • Weekly activity helper

  • Carpooling to offsite activities

  • Participation in weekend camps

  • Hall working bees, and

  • Taking a role on our Parent Committee.

What’s your speciality?

Do you have a special skill that our cubs or scouts would enjoy learning about? Scouts isn’t all about knots, tents and badges, a big part of the scouting curriculum is learning life skills to help them grow into responsible and capable young people.

Are you a chef/cook? A nurse/first aider? A builder or tradie? A coder? An electronics expert? Whatever your skill, let us know and we would love to build it into our program for a weekday evening or as part of a camp. You’d be amazed how interesting your job or hobby can be!

Parent Committee

Our Group and Youth leaders are busy planning and running programs for our kids, so our Parent Committee takes on the administrative roll of keeping the group going.

We organise building maintenance and upgrades, purchase equipment, coordinate volunteers, handle communications and marketing, and all sorts of other things to help out.

If you are keen to be involved, reach out to our Committee Chair – Darrell Mason, 0438 833 955.

What’s required?

All parents require a volunteer Working With Children Check (WWCC) linked to Scouts Victoria to help out with the Group.

This is super quick, easy and FREE (see link below).

You’ll need it to support pretty much all youth organisations in Victoria, so why not get the paperwork done now and be ready to help.

There is also some quick, mandatory online child safety training required. Our Group Leader will provide access to this upon registration.

Scouts are Sun Smart and need to wear a broad brimmed hat or similar and sunscreen when participating in any outdoor activities during summer.

Appropriate footwear is also essential. Hiking shoes, sneakers, or other closed-toed shoes are required. Thongs or Crocs can be worn in some circumstances. Bare feet are not allowed.

The fees for Scouts help us provide a high-quality program filled with exciting activities and valuable experiences for our members. These fees support our dedicated volunteer leaders in providing the resources to keep our programs running smoothly.

The current yearly fee structure is below, fees are pro-rated based on when you join.

  • $400 for the first child

  • $360 for every subsequent child.

There is also a one-time joining fee of $30 to cover unit expenses on your new scarf, badges, and handbook.

More details can be found in our Fee Summary document.

While our membership fees support the core program and resources, camps, excursions, and special activities may have additional costs. These experiences are designed to enrich your child's journey with us. Your Section Leader will inform you of any extra charges. If you're facing financial difficulties, please speak to the Group Leader. We believe every child should have the opportunity to participate, and we're here to help make that possible.

More details can be found in our Fee Summary document.

We are sorry, but there are no concessions available, and since a portion of the membership fee is used to cover the Scout group's insurance and registration costs. As the Scout group must pay these costs in one payment in full at the start of the financial year, we are unable to offer payment plans.
